DIY Classes

Sacramento, Placerville, & Lake Tahoe DIY Wedding Flower Classes

Create memories and have fun with your friends and family by DIY -ing your wedding flowers. You’ll be proud to be able to say, “I did it myself!”   By taking classes in wedding design, specially designed for you, your family, and friends, with no previous experience, you’ll experience less stress and have greater success for your actual wedding day flowers.

Classes are held at my home studio; you’ll get a lot of hands-on help with a semi-private class of a maximum of four students.  If you have a larger group, I’ll come to you.  Either way, I’ll provide the florist’s tools of the trade; fresh bulk flowers; and florist supplies. At my studio, I’ll provide snacks and beverages; you are welcome to bring cameras to document how to put things together and of you and your friends having fun. At your place, I’ll bring the flowers and my florist supplies; you supply tables and chairs and trash bags/cans for your attendees (and any munchies!). The evening classes are 6:30-9:00; the all-in-one Quick Learn class is a much faster pace and just the basics, and is a six hour class.  If you are looking for more in-depth knowledge for a particular type of arrangement, I would recommend the evening classes. If you just need to know the basic mechanics of how to do it, and don’t want the details, then the Quick Learn might be for you.  If you are considering creating floral designs for weddings as a business, then all of the classes are recommended as an overview.

This space will list regularly scheduled classes soon; if you’d like a private class at your home, we can schedule that.

Available Classes:

  • Wedding Flowers 101

This class introduces the beginner to floral design with a wedding viewpoint.  We’ll talk about economy, standard, and premium flowers and their costs per stem, and how you can get your look for less; styles of design so that you have an understanding of why estimates can vary from florist to florist; floral design art basics including color, scale, and texture; seasonal and color availability of flowers, and how growers bunches are packed; all the different floral considerations for weddings; different bouquet types; how to to do basic flower processing and hydration; special care for special flowers; the timeline for ordering and creating your wedding flowers; set-up considerations; and reception centerpiece ideas.  I’ll also explain what to look for in a florist and typical wedding flower prices, in case you decide that you want a professional floral designer to make all or part of your wedding flowers. A good starting class to understanding florists’ viewpoints, and wedding design. You will make a centerpiece to take home. $79 includes all flowers and use of my supplies and tools.

  • Wedding Personal Flowers: Bouquets

We will explore different bouquet types – hand-tied, holder, and cascade in a holder. You’ll learn different techniques for creating a pretty handle.  You’ll learn how to make the bride’s bouquet and the bridesmaids’ bouquets. You will leave class with your own bouquet, of your type choice!  $125 includes all flowers and use of my supplies and tools.

  • Wedding Personal Flowers: Corsages, Bouts, and Halos

You will learn both the wire-and-tape method as well as the cold-glue method to create corsages, boutonnieres, and flower girl halos.  You will create and take home at least one corsage or bout, and a flower girl halo. $79 includes all flowers and use of my supplies and tools.

  • Wedding Flowers: Ceremony

We’ll talk about all the different variations you can choose to decorate your ceremony site – for the aisle and for ceremony markers.  Using my own arch at my studio, I’ll show you how to design and attach a spray.   You’ll see how to make a large ceremony marker arrangement. I’ll share with you how to determine how many flowers in a pomander, and how many roses for an aisle strewn with petals.  I’ll give you aisle pomander alternatives, and you’ll create and go home with a ceremony marker arrangement.  $149 includes all flowers and use of my supplies and tools.

  • Wedding Flowers: Reception

From the escort table decor, to decorating the cake, to centerpieces, we’ll have a show-and-tell of many of the popular trends and ideas.  Prior to class, you’ll be able to send me photos of what you’d like to see (within reason for a beginner)…and I’ll do my best to accommodate you and show you how to create it!  You will go home with a centerpiece that you’ve created. $125 includes all flowers and use of my supplies and tools.

  • Wedding Flowers: Quick Learn

This is a fast-style course that is a package deal:  you’ll learn just the basics in an accelerated format in six hours on a Saturday or Sunday.  You will learn to make, and will take home a bouquet, bout or corsage, aisle pretty little vase, ceremony marker arrangement, and centerpiece.  Held at my studio, you’ll enjoy lunch and will have the opportunity to meet and greet other local wedding vendors in a friendly and informal setting. $249 includes all flowers and use of my supplies and tools, and lunch.

  • Wedding Flowers:  The Business End

This class is for those who are interested in learning the business end of wedding flowers:  how to get your county/city business license; reseller’s permit to buy wholesale; sales tax remittance; insurance; finding your niche; marketing and SEO; how to network with other wedding professionals; how to write a flower recipe; some basic flower recipes; how to determine how many flowers to buy; where to buy wholesale flowers; where to find inspiration; trade shows and magazines; what’s your design style?; photography tips.  $250 includes a six hour class, a field trip to a local flower wholesaler, lunch, and materials.

  • Specialty Classes

Offered occasionally, and as requested, to go more in-depth on certain types of design or items where you will actually make the items and take them home (not just demos) – such as wreath design, ceremony sprays for arches, pomanders, how to set up tall centerpieces, etc.  Prices will depend on flowers and supplies.

Classes taught by Monique Wilber of A Special Day Designs.  Monique has been designing wedding flowers since 1988 and takes care to keep her style and design skills updated as techniques and styles change.  Please visit her website to see her wedding style.
